Understanding your results

Findy reports what it observed and why something was flagged. This page explains how to read that — including the questions where the honest answer is simply "no".

The labels

Findy marks each discovered device either as ordinary or as showing camera-related indicators, and shows the specific reason it was marked. There is no "confirmed" state and no certainty score. Almost nothing here is a verdict about a physical object — with one exception noted below.

The first of those is the exception to the rule above: a name match alone is enough to flag a device, and the wording "Likely <vendor> camera" overstates what a name can tell you, since many of those manufacturers also make televisions, doorbells and routers. We treat that wording as a known weakness. Read it as a starting point, not a finding.

There is no "confirmed" label

Findy never tells you it has confirmed a hidden camera, because it cannot know that. It sees ports, service advertisements, radio signals, reflections and magnetic readings — not objects. Every strong result still ends with you looking at the thing itself.

What does "unknown device" mean?

It means Findy observed something and could not work out what it is. On the network scanner it is an IP address that responded but published no name and no recognisable service. On the Bluetooth scanner it is a device advertising without a readable name. Being unidentifiable is the most common case on any network, and on its own it is not a sign of anything. It is a statement about the limits of what Findy could observe, not about the device.

Why Findy cannot name the manufacturer

iOS does not expose the ARP table to apps, so Findy cannot read a device's hardware address and cannot look up its vendor. The network inventory is keyed by IP address only. That also means an address can change between scans when the router hands out a new lease, so a familiar device may reappear looking new.

Why do I see so many devices in a hotel?

Because a hotel network carries every guest's phone, laptop, tablet and watch, plus the hotel's own televisions, streaming sticks, printers, thermostats, access points and door systems. Hundreds of entries is normal. What matters is not the number of devices but whether any single one shows camera-related indicators. Some hotels use client isolation, which hides other guests from you and can make the same network look almost empty instead.

Both outcomes are uninformative in themselves. A crowded list is not evidence of surveillance, and an empty list is not evidence of safety — it often just means the network will not let you see anything. More on ordinary devices that look suspicious.

What the "new since your last scan" badge means

When you scan a network, Findy remembers the addresses it saw. Next time you scan that same network, anything that was not there before is badged as new. That is useful in a place you scan repeatedly — your own home — where a genuinely new arrival is worth a look.

It is much weaker in a hotel or rental, where guests come and go constantly and addresses are reassigned. A new badge in that setting usually means someone else checked in.

The honest limits

These are the three questions we are asked most, and all three answers are unwelcome. We would rather say them plainly than imply otherwise.

Can Findy detect cameras on another network?

No. The network scanner can only see the network your iPhone is currently joined to. A camera on the host's private network, on a separate guest network, on a hidden SSID you have not joined, or connected over a mobile data SIM is invisible to it. This is a hard limit of how networking works on iOS, not a setting you can change.

Can Findy detect cameras that are turned off?

No. Every method here depends on the device doing something observable: transmitting on the network, advertising over Bluetooth, emitting infrared, reflecting light through a lens, or distorting the magnetic field around it. A powered-off device does none of the first four. Only the guided visual inspection and, in some cases, a close magnetic reading of the object itself can find hardware that is not running.

Can Findy detect microphones?

A purely passive microphone that does not transmit cannot be detected by any of these methods, and Findy will not find it. There is no radio signal to hear, no network presence to scan and no lens to reflect light. What Findy can find is a device that happens to contain a microphone, if that device advertises over Bluetooth or is reachable on the network you are joined to. That is a different thing, and it depends entirely on the device transmitting.

How to build confidence in a result

A single indicator rarely means much. Agreement between methods means more.

  1. Read the evidence Findy lists for the flag, not just the label.
  2. Repeat the scan. Signals that appear once and never again are usually noise or a passing device.
  3. Ask whether an ordinary explanation fits — a television, a printer, a thermostat, a neighbour's equipment. It usually does.
  4. See whether a second method points at the same physical place.
  5. Look at the object. That is the step that actually settles it.
  6. If you believe the result is wrong, report the detection so the labelling can be improved.
